No, I don't, if it's indeed true that women need a PhD to earn as much as a man with a BA. Wages are not equal. Women are still called whores for being openly sexual and proud of their sexuality, whereas men tend to more congratulated about being a 'stud'. I think it is obvious that right now there is still not complete equality between the two.
There is a major flipside though - I think women can get away with other things more than men can. Middle-aged women can be obsessed with young famous boys and barely anyone bats a blind eye. If men were all over Selena Gomez the same way women are fawning over Justin Bieber, most people would deem them 'perverts' or 'creepy' or something similar. 'Cougars' are celebrated, but men in the same position tend not to be.
A lot of people put little importance on men being victims of rape or domestic abuse, but with women of course it is a very important issue. I'm not saying we should start to ignore the droves of women in these situations to favor the less frequent male victims, but since society puts so much a focus on women being the victims of these issues (when's the last time you heard of a men's refuge center?) a lot of men are too afraid to come forward.
Women are "allowed" to show their emotions much more than men - if a man cries, somehow that makes him a 'pussy'. If a man writes soppy love poetry to his girlfriend, somehow, paradoxically, it makes him 'gay'. Wow, world.
I know I seem to have turned this into a 'men are victims' type thing, but I'm just highlighting the fact that there are actually a lot of issues surrounding men as well as women. Indeed, I've seen so many so-called feminists act like women ought to be superior over men, not equal, which really defeats the purpose. Perhaps a lot of women think men deserve to be inferior for once, but really, discriminating against men makes you just as bad. It's comparable to some gay people who are now acting like being gay is better than being straight - it's not, and calling straight people 'breeders' is just as derogatory as being called 'faggot'. I understand that the male problems I highlighted might seem less important in comparison to the droves of problems that women have always faced and still face today, but we can't ignore those problems either. Being a woman myself, it actually sickens me how some men, and men in general, are sometimes treated by women who themselves have been oppressed, and thus should know how it feels. It seems backward to see some women harping on about sexism against them, but then turning around and claiming "all men are scum" because the men they chose to be with were bad apples.
Equal should mean equal. Some people have used the "but men and women are NOT equal, they're different in so many ways" argument, but we're only looking for equal pay, equal judgment based on the same actions, equal standards, not that we want everyone to look and act the same and have no differences between them. Those people seem to misunderstand the fight for gender equality.
(This is supposed to be public, but I can't seem to choose that option. Anyone got a solution? I could make my journal public but then restrict all my entries except for Writer's Block to friends only?)
