Since I have Thursdays with no classes, I had planned to ask around nearby schools to see if any of them are willing to have me there for some experience, since I need some if I apply for the PDGE in December. As luck would have it, there is a school in the street parallel to the one I live in!

Yesterday evening, I went to the intro meeting for the Alexandrian Society. It's my last year here; the least I could do is finally join the classics society, right? I had planned to only stay an hour, because Rich was with me but he didn't want to stay, so he sat in the corridors somewhere in the building till Jane, the secretary, let him sit in an empty classroom. But I lost track of time and ended up staying two hours :( He ought to have come up and said he wanted to leave, but he didn't want to ruin my fun or anything! I owe him, haha.

I feel guilty about this one thing that happened though. One of my lecturers, Luke, is back from taking a year's sabbatical leave. My friend, David, told me that there are rumors that the reason was because he's having an affair with a student!, and when he offered to leave his wife for her, she rebuffed him! Well, we discussed it a little, with me mostly telling him about a teacher at my high school who had an affair with a student and then committed suicide when everyone found out, but it turned out Luke was pretty much right next to us when we were talking about it. I have him for two of my three classes, and he's a lovely, lovely man - I hope he didn't hear it! I don't know how I'm going to act around him now - as for the rumors, I don't really believe them, but if they are true, it's his business, not mine. He's pretty sensitive, it seems, so I hope we didn't upset him or anything!

As for the society, I think I'm going to get involved in some of the events this year - the symposium that's on next week, the guest lecture (it's about onomastics, apparently, which is very interesting for me), but not the Christmas party, I don't think. Of course, there are drinks at all these events, but most people are sensible enough at events that aren't blatant parties, and at least this society does things in addition to the drinking! Alcohol is, as it should be if there at all, enjoyed in conjunction to other things. I personally don't see why it has to be involved at all, but then, I don't really mind, because there's usually Coke and yummy foodies too!

I'm halfway through Wuthering Heights. Having seen the movie (the one with Ralph Fiennes, no less) I understand the story fully and so I don't get lost at any moment in the book, though I think that's also to do with my improved vocabulary - when I tried to read Jane Austen's Manfield Park years ago, I didn't get it much at all, though I'm sure if I were to read it now I would be fine. After all, Pride and Prejudice was a piece of cake to understand. :)

I really should be working on my dissertation right now, but I've put in quite a bit of work this week, and will be tomorrow morning as well, so I think I'll have a break :)
